The Department of Public Works operates fixed-bus services in a number of communities throughout the County. In January 2006, it launched a new shuttle service in the South Whittier area to address unmet transit needs of the community (see http://ladpw.org/PDD/Transit/Page_10.cfm). Environmental designers Selbert Perkins were commissioned to collaborate with an ad hoc advisory art committee of area representatives appointed by Supervisor Knabe (Fourth District), Supervisor Molina (First District) and Congresswoman Sánchez to develop an appealing name and look for the new service. In addition to naming the service "Sunshine Shuttle," (after the nearby Sunshine Acres neighborhood) the consultant designed the exterior of the shuttle bus, bus stop signs, street light pole banners, and a logo to be used on brochures, promotional materials and on the Transit Operation's web page. About the Designer: Selbert Perkins Design Collaborative is a multidisciplinary design firm with offices in Arlington, Massachusetts and Playa del Rey, California. Their environmental designs seek to inform, educate and entertain with a sophisticated sense of humor that reveals a story about the place. Robin Perkins received a BFA at the Rhode Island School of Design in Graphic Design and studied sculpture at Massachusetts College of Art. |
