Project Description

Sybil Brand Institute, a women’s jail, was built in 1963 and closed its doors in 1997. The County is considering either renovating or replacing the existing facility. Accomplished public artist Michael Davis was included on the schematic design team of Sybil Brand Institute to influence the design of the facility and recommend how a civic art allocation could be appropriately used at a jail facility. Davis researched current County inmate prison programs as well as successful prison art programs nationwide to recommend investments in arts programming. Davis also interfaced with the adjacent community of City Terrace and submitted a final report, recommending the best opportunities for future civic art.
