Project DescriptionThe new 10,000 square foot single-story facility, to be built on the Olive View-UCLA Medical Center campus, will provide mental health urgent care services and follow-up care for clients and their family members, totaling approximately 9,000 visits per year. The design of the facility is intended to support the Department of Mental Health’s values of hope, wellness and recovery and will be a welcoming environment for the children, adolescents and adults who will be treated there. Clients referred to this center are typically experiencing acute emotional crises and may also suffer from co-occurring (mental health and substance abuse) disorders. The goal of the center is to provide support and interventions for individuals of all ages to ensure their ability to thrive in their families, schools and communities. The project will be LEED silver certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and is scheduled to be complete in 2011. Trachtenberg and Miller have designed a hanging sculpture, made of rip-stop nylon, and hand-painted 24’ freize for the lobby. Outside, artist-designed stepping stones will lead to the front entry and the interior courtyard. A “green” fence screening the courtyard will be topped with a 49’ custom sliver of multi-colored polycarbonate. About the ArtistAmy Trachtenberg is both a studio and public artist. She was trained at California State University and L’Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts in Paris. Her public commissions include the Children’s Hospital in Oakland, CA and the Hillview Library in San Jose. Jeff Miller is a practicing landscape architect as well as a collaborator on art projects. He holds a BA from Bard College, and an MLA from the University of Massachusetts. |
