  42nd ANNUAL LOS ANGELES COUNTY
HOLIDAY CELEBRATION
APPLICATION INFORMATION / 2001

GENERAL INFORMATION

Each year since 1959 the Arts Commission has produced a free Holiday Celebration on December 24th. Community and professional choirs, music ensembles, and dance companies perform for audiences in the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion while the program is broadcast live on KCET. Last year 1,700 people performed on the program and an estimated 6,000 people attended the program throughout the evening. Several hundred thousand more Southern Californians watched the live broadcast from their homes.

This year the 42nd Annual Los Angeles County Holiday Celebration will be held Monday, December 24, 2001 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion from 3:00-9:00 p.m. Both the event and parking at the Music Center are free to the public.

KCET will televise the performance live with a rebroadcast on December 25, 2001.

APPLICATION ELIGIBILITY AND COMPENSATION

ATTENTION ORCHESTRAS: Orchestral segments will not be programmed this year due to technical limitations.

Eligibility
Los Angeles County-based professional and community choirs, music ensembles and dance companies are eligible to apply to perform on the program.

  • All applicants must be non-profit organizations; non-profit public and private schools are also eligible. Individual teachers and commercial organizations may not apply.

Compensation
Participating organizations will receive honorariums:

  • Choirs - $200 to $500;
  • Dance companies - $500 to $1,000 (fee to be determined by Arts Commission based on scope and length of programming);
  • Music Groups - $200 to $500. Members of the Professional Musicians Union, Local 47 who perform on the program will receive scale pay. Musicians who are not members of Local 47 will not be paid in addition to what the organization will receive.

Note: Most groups will receive 4 to 12 minutes of performance time (this can be a long time on television). The production staff will assign the amount of time.

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

If chosen to participate, you will be required to attend a one-hour rehearsal on either Saturday, December 1st or Sunday, December 9th. Local 47 union musicians will receive scale pay for their participation in the rehearsals. If your group does not attend the required rehearsal, you will be unable to perform on the program. Groups with complex sound set-ups will also be required to participate in a sound check the morning of the show.
  • Choirs cannot use prerecorded music--there are no exceptions (this is a technical limitation). A piano will be available for your use.

  • Choirs are discouraged from using percussive accompaniment, as this instrumentation is extremely difficult to balance acoustically for a live show. Please be sure to notify us in your application if you cannot live without the drums.

  • Dance companies may use pre-recorded music. Appropriate holiday-themed material is especially important for dance companies.
