Project Description

Artist Clement Hanami was selected as a Creative Strategist – cultural observer, creative interpreter, social practice artist, and art maker in the Department of Public Health PLACE Program Vision Zero team. “Vision Zero" is a strategy that aims to reduce traffic fatalities and severe injuries while increasing safe, healthy, and equitable mobility for all. Hanami worked with County departments and stakeholders to formulate and implement an action plan for Vision Zero, conduct field research and identify community assets and barriers to safe walking and biking in communities. Through an iterative process, the artist developed artistic interventions, strategies, and engagement plans that outline programmatic activities to raise awareness of traffic safety issues and the benefits to the community at large about reducing severe injury and fatal collisions. The artist also worked directly with the community through a series of workshops to develop text and imagery regarding traffic safety to be incorporated into temporary and permanent public art, including bike racks, billboards, and bus shelter posters. As part of this activity, Hanami conducted a series of workshops at the Woodcrest Library, wherein participants created text and imagery for billboards and bus shelter art that convey the need for drivers to slow down and watch out for pedestrians.
Artist Clement Hanami completed installation of a bike rack and internal display of participant created artwork at Woodcrest Library. The billboards and bus shelters were on display in the neighboring community in November of 2021 and a second round of billboards were on view in January 2022.
