Project Description

In response to the relocation of the Christopher Columbus statue, the Civic Art Division, Los Angeles City/County Native American Indian Commission, and Grand Park worked together to develop arts programming at the site of the former Columbus statue in Grand Park. This arts programming celebrated the rich historical legacies of the area’s Indigenous peoples. Artists Cindi Alvitre, Carly Lake, and Scott Wilson of the Puvungna Collective were chosen to design virtual programming for Indigenous Peoples Day and Native American Heritage Month.  Artist Mercedes Dorame was selected to create a temporary artwork inspired by the celestial mappings of her ancestors, which was on view in Grand Park from November 21, 2020, through January 4, 2021.
