826LA is a nonprofit organization with locations in Mar Vista and Echo Park, a Writers' Room on the campus of Manual Arts High School in South LA, and relationships with more than 100 Los Angeles schools. 826LA's mission is to support students, ages six to eighteen, with their creative and expository writing skills, and to help teachers inspire their students to write.
Product development and execution, environmental design, window display design and printed matter are some of the projects for the Events and Store Design Intern. With the Designer, they will contribute to store appearance and creating products, they will help build the brand for the Time Travel Marts, update the Time Travel Mart website with photography and web assets, and contribute to event planning and visual identity building for the fall. Work will be printed, digital, and environmental. The intern can expect to gain experience in working with clients on a deadline, sketching concepts, designing products and environmental graphics, and participating in the production of store updates and 826LA events.
Design intern applicants must be proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, including InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator. Other important requirements for applicants include:
- Desire to work in an organization with a strong spirit of social justice.
- Completion of a criminal background check, administered by 826LA.
- Basic knowledge of copy editing and copyediting marks.
- Willingness to be an ambassador for 826LA's mission.
- Ability to work on deadlines.
The following skills and experiences are desired, but not required:
- Experience working with children in professional setting.
- Access to car.
- Spanish language proficiency.
