In close collaboration with the Artistic and Administrative Directors, the Marketing and Program Intern’s primary project will be assisting with the marketing, production and educational efforts for the premiere of our upcoming production, "Adobe Punk.”
Working as a team with the Staff and other relevant contractors, the Intern’s work will consist of:
MARKETING — create an “Adobe Punk” social media campaign for the period leading up to, and including, the premiere in order to develop audience development and engagement. Create other related marketing collateral as needed (info sheet, videos, etc.)
PRODUCTION — assist in various pre-production tasks for “Adobe Punk” in advance of its 2022 premiere which could include designer support, on-site logistics, etc.
EDUCATION — work on the “Adobe Punk” study guide/brochure for high school students that explores the production’s related content of 1980s L.A. punk music and early California history
A work of historical fiction set in the early 1980s in working-class Bell Gardens, “Adobe Punk” will tell the story of three young punk music fans who find refuge in what turns out to be one of the oldest adobe homes in L.A. County (built by the Lugo family in 1844). Based on an idea by Gabriel Garza, the play will be co created by Garza and About...Productions’ Producing Artistic Director Theresa Chavez, a mother and son team and 7th & 8th generation Lugos, who share a passion for exploring L.A. history. In development since the summer of 2019, public programs include work-in-progress readings and related panels in Feb/March 2020 and the full production premiere in winter/spring 2022.
Over the past 32 years the company’s work has focused on uncovering buried cultural histories, exploring notions of cultural identity and authenticity, voicing new historical points of view, exploring the human spiritual and creative condition, and defining the relationship between memory, history, and cultural artistic practice.
A number of the company’s acclaimed works are highlighted on our website (aboutpd.org), which was redesigned by our 2019 intern. Our innovative Young Theaterworks program helps highest-risk youth in the Greater L.A. area build literacy, communication, and collaboration skills, while being empowered to become stewards of their community’s history.
As necessary, the Intern will split time between working remotely from a home office, working in the About...Productions’ downtown Pasadena office, and on-site theater/production locations. Our office is within walking distance from a Gold Line stop, restaurants, museums, bookstores, public library, and other resources. We are near both Old Town Pasadena and the Pasadena Playhouse District. This is a part-time internship working 15-20 hours/week from June through October (start and end dates are flexible).
The ideal candidate will be able to take direction and run with it. This requires enthusiasm, clear communication, good time management, and the ability to work well independently. They should have a passion for the performing arts in general, and a desire to learn about the L.A. arts and culture landscape. They should have good writing skills, be Macintosh proficient, have experience with the Microsoft Office Suite and Google apps. Experience with photo and/or video editing software and graphics programs are highly encouraged. Other assets include marketing and/or community outreach experience; and production planning experience. Interest in Los Angeles history and familiarity with ensemble-based theater and/or theater by communities of color is very helpful. Preference will be given to those applicants with a serious interest in pursuing a career in the the performing arts, arts education, arts administration, and/or marketing.
