Red Hen Press is committed to publishing works of literary excellence, supporting diversity, and promoting literacy in our local schools. We seek a community of readers and writers who are actively engaged in the essential human practice known as literature.
The Design Internship will take place through Red Hen Press, an independent nonprofit publishing press located in Pasadena, California. During the internship period, the Design Intern will work with the Production Associate to draft and edit original designs for the press's various publications, including book covers and interiors, postcards, web scrolls, and other promotional materials. This internship is intended for applicants seeking to build a portfolio and gain hands-on experience in designing materials for public consumption.
All applicants should be proficient in the Adobe Creative Suite applications; fluency in InDesign is required, and familiar with Photoshop and Illustrator is preferred. An upbeat and polite personality is a must, as are strong verbal and written skills. The intern must be able to maintain deadlines, multitask, work individually and collaboratively and with initiative, and communicate with supervisors in order to operate effectively within the office. Previous experience with book design will help an individual's application, but in general the willingness to learn will also be taken into consideration. An interest in and/or knowledge of literature is essential.
