'Con Mucho Amor'

Mural Activity Kit
By Lorenzo Hurtado Segovia

In the artwork Con Mucho Amor, Lorenzo Hurtado Segovia was inspired by the visual richness of local markets like El Mercadito and Placita Olvera. Traditional colorful patterns and new synthetic materials were combined to create a veritable feast for the eyes. Hurtado Segovia's artwork features poles and banners emblazoned with celebratory imagery that he sourced from the many cultures that comprise the Los Angeles General Medical Center community, from the original Tongva settlers to current residents. The welcoming papel picado banners depict themes of music, food, and nature that are foundational to the life and well-being of the community. At the heart of the mural, a stately oak tree, inspired by the grand oak at the Los Angeles General Medical Center's Child Care Center, symbolizes history, strength, and longevity.

With this activity kit, you can create your own version of the mural with household items like a few sheets of paper and some pens.

Background

Con Mucho Amor was commissioned by the LA County Department of Art and Culture for the Los Angeles General Medical Center's Restorative Care Village.

Restorative Care Villages
Los Angeles County built four of the Country's first residential mental health and well-being campuses that provide a new kind of holistic environment to serve the interrelated needs of homelessness, substance abuse, mental illness, job training/housing, and medical co-morbidity. The new Restorative Care Village at the Los Angeles General Medical Center offers a safe place to stay, recuperate, and receive ongoing clinical support, with the ultimate goal of helping residents successfully reintegrate into their communities.
