The Production Interns will serve as Production Associates for our Young Playwrights Festival, now entering its 34th year. YPF produces plays from 12 playwrights under age of 19, with professional directors, actors, and designers. Our interns are part of the team and participate in all aspects of production, working directly with the Executive Director, Producing Director, Production Supervisor, and Associate Producer to ensure all production matters are handled, including casting, scheduling, organizing, social media, ticketing, etc. As the interns' skills are assessed, tasks may vary to guide existing ability or provide access to new areas of interest like lighting or sound design, or working more with directors. The interns will gain an understanding of the constraints of producing as a nonprofit while learning to use time efficiently, communicate thoroughly, and work sustainably to repurpose costumes, props, and set pieces, as well as how to affordably acquire goods. We provide meaningful mentorship by having regular in person check ins and asking the interns to share their experience and perspective about how the job is going. We welcome their feedback about what’s working and how the position could be more impactful for them.

Called "One of the best theatre companies in America" by The Drama League, The Blank has produced the Young Playwrights Festival since 1992. Each year we welcome young writers ages 19 and under to share their original work with us. What began as a one-night only reading, with scripts submitted from only Los Angeles County, has become a month-long festival of 12 plays professionally staged for full weekend runs, with submissions from as many as 37 different states from across the country thus far!
"The invaluable benefit of the festival is that it provides – at a crucial time - collaborations with professional theater artists. These experiences helped embolden me to pursue my dreams. For someone like me, whose parents knew nothing about the arts - it can mean the world to hear real artists say, without condescension: 'You’re good at this. You’re a writer. You can do this if you want to.' I cannot sing The Blank’s praises enough. YPF changed my life." -STEPHEN KARAM - Tony Award Winner / Two-time Pulitzer Prize Finalist / Three-Time YPF Winner
