Description

 The intern will assist with producing daily and weekly news segments, researching and writing Public Service Announcements (PSAs), and supporting on-air programming. Under the guidance, the intern will gain hands-on experience in broadcast journalism, FCC compliance, and community storytelling within a professional radio environment. The KQBH News Media Intern will work approximately 20 hours per week from June through September at Boyle Heights Arts Conservatory’s community radio station, KQBH 101.5 FM.
 

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have strong writing and interpersonal communication skills, familiarity with Google Workspace (Drive, Docs, Gmail), and an interest in news, public affairs, and culture-based storytelling. Candidates should be comfortable with conducting research, organizing information, and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment. A familiarity with local issues, community-based media, and BBIPOC (Black, Brown, Indigenous, People of Color) communities is essential, as this position centers news for the people rather than mass media. A willingness to learn audio editing and production tools is encouraged, along with a commitment to community storytelling and social equity in media.
 

Background

Boyle Heights Arts Conservatory (BHAC) is a Los Angeles–based nonprofit that builds equitable career pathways in media, arts, and technology. Through programs like KQBH 101.5 FM, the Bridge Academy Movement (BAM) for justice-impacted youth, and Teaching Artist training in Restorative Cultural Arts, BHAC provides hands-on experience, professional development, and creative leadership opportunities. Each participant is supported by a network of mentors/femtors/themtors—industry professionals who offer culturally grounded guidance and skill-building. Our mission is to prepare emerging creatives to succeed in the arts and entertainment industries while promoting community voice, cultural equity, and social impact.

No prior radio experience required—curiosity, accountability, and community commitment are most important.
