Background

A 99-seat performing arts center in Sierra Madre, Sierra Madre Playhouse (SMP) produces and presents high-quality performances that promote artistic discovery, cultural exchange, represent diverse perspectives, foster dialogue and empathy, and celebrate cultural diversity. The Playhouse is a designated historic landmark and one of the few venues in the world that has continuously presented entertainment for over a century. In 2023, Rep. Judy Chu named SMP ‘Nonprofit of the Year’ for the San Gabriel Valley, and in 2024 the Playhouse celebrated its 100th anniversary.  Each season (January–December), we present ~60 works that introduce ~15,000 patrons to innovative art forms and distinctive narratives. We present jazz, contemporary, classical, global music, theater, dance, and family programming; host workshops and community outreach; and showcase emerging artists. These activities enrich the cultural fabric of our region, offering residents and visitors meaningful artistic experiences.
