Los Angeles, CA 90026
The Summer Programs Intern(s) will work directly with our Echo Park Writing Lab Programs and Operations Manager and Tutoring Coordinator to assist in implementing 826LA’s summer camp program for elementary school students, the Summer Writer’s Workshop for middle school students, and helping with planning and preparation for the 2026-27 academic year. During this program, the intern(s) will work with their 826LA supervisors to prepare for our 2-week intensive summer camp where students come to 826LA to work on a creative writing project that is written, published, and/or presented during this time. The Summer 2026 theme is mythological creatures and will include prepping artwork and props, setting up creative writing documents and prompts, assisting with an off-site field trip, and more. The intern will work directly with elementary school-aged students to help guide and mentor them through their summer camp experience. They will participate in community outreach, working with 826LA’s partners and contacting parents to ensure student attendance. They will also brief volunteers on the day’s goal and take turns leading group activities. Each intern will have the opportunity to design and lead (or team lead) a lesson. This intern will also offer similar assistance for the Summer Writer’s Workshop, aimed at middle school students who craft a piece of writing for an anthology which will be published and available to read online, by borrowing through the Los Angeles Public Library, and/or purchased in 826LA’s Time Travel Mart. Finally, in the final weeks of their internship, the student will participate in 826LA’s “Summer Professional Development Week,” a time when our staff comes together in person for talks from subject matter experts in creative writing and arts education, plans for the coming year, and works together to continue to build on the success of our 20+ years as a leader in arts and creative writing education in Los Angeles. Planning will include selecting themes for the upcoming school-year’s book publications, and preparing for after-school programming and field trips. This internship opportunity will give selected students the opportunity to plan and implement creative writing/arts education projects, mentor younger students, and gain hands-on experience in the field of arts education.
The interns will also participate in day-to-day tasks including prepping the Writing Lab for students and cleaning up at the end of each session, calling caregivers to offer reminders about programs, and completing data entry as necessary. They will also be asked to attend meetings, as needed, if those meetings occur during the time they are participating in their internship for that week.
Interest in education and working with students, interest in creative writing preferred.
