(Internship Location #2)
Rosenthal Theater @ Inner City Arts
720 Kohler St
Los Angeles, CA 90021
The Producing Intern will have the opportunity to work on a range of projects at HERO Theatre, including a devised youth play with Producing Artistic Director Elisa Bocanegra; development workshops for our production of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM, a modern translation of Shakespeare’s play; and THE YOUNG DOLPHINS 3, the final chapter in our highly acclaimed trilogy of plays, to be presented at Inner-City Arts’ Rosenthal Theater. The Producing Intern will work closely with HERO Theatre’s Producing Artistic Director, Elisa Bocanegra, and Artistic Producer, Peren Yesilyurt, and will be mentored one-on-one by both and invited to be part of the creative process for multiple projects. By the end of the internship, the intern will have learned what it takes to produce a play from early stages to the finished product, what it means to be a theatre producer, and what a collaborative & equitable theatre space looks like.
The duties of HERO Theatre’s Producing Intern will include:
- Taking part in the casting process (assisting with writing character breakdowns with HERO Theatre’s Artistic Producer, Producing Artistic Director, and Casting Director; viewing the auditions with the artistic team and experiencing a professional audition environment)
- Participating in production meetings with the director, producers, and designers during the intern’s allotted schedule
- Reading the latest versions of scripts
- Helping to coordinate artist communication and schedules, such as learning how to build production calendars with the Artistic Produce
- Assisting with development workshops for our production of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, with the devised youth play, and with pre-production for THE YOUNG DOLPHINS 3 in a hands-on experience.
Approximately 60% of the intern’s time will be spent at HERO Theatre’s office worksite, and 40% of the time will be spent at our secondary worksite, Inner-City Arts, where we are a company-in-residence.
HERO Theatre’s Production and Dramaturgy Intern and Producing Intern will primarily be focused on the artistic projects described above, but will also help with day-to-day artistic operations and light administrative duties. Interns will attend weekly leadership team meetings, help manage deadlines, and keep track of important events on the artistic calendar. Both interns will also learn about HERO Theatre’s longtime community partnerships, such as local women’s shelters and transitional housing shelters. HERO Theatre also provides customized learning and engagement opportunities for interns based on their own unique interests and desires. HERO frequently invites guest speakers from the industry. Such industry professionals can include agents, directors, actors, playwrights, and others. HERO Theatre and its board and leadership team have a large network of industry contacts, and they are generous with connecting interns to additional resources and learning opportunities.
As a social and environmental justice company, HERO Theatre is seeking applicants who care and have an understanding of social issues happening today because they are relevant to the company and our artistry. We are seeking a team player and collaborator, who understands that being a part of the team at HERO Theatre means to be in service to communities in need. We’re seeking a self-starter, who enjoys working with a team, and who is enthusiastic about the work at hand. Someone who can follow directions and follow through without having to be micro-managed. Applicants should have excellent written and oral communication skills and basic administrative and typing skills. Experience with Google Drive is highly preferred. Some experience with Microsoft Office software preferred, particularly Word and Excel. Spanish speakers are welcome, but not required.
HERO Theatre is a community-based company that uses art to model and bring forth social progress. We invite audiences to envision America as we do by presenting theatre that uplifts communities that have been harmed. Our core audience members leave our theater feeling seen and represented authentically. We champion work that we feel is relevant and support artists at all stages in their careers. We use our artistry to bring sustainability education to vulnerable communities. HERO was founded in 2011 by Producing Artistic Director Elisa Bocanegra, a Puerto Rican artist. As one of the first Latinas to perform in major regional theater, Bocanegra has survived tremendous racism and been saddened and frustrated by the lack of equity and inclusion in American theatre. After an inspiring conversation with fellow cast-mate Olympia Dukakis, Bocanegra, who comes from humble beginnings, started HERO to elevate artists from underrepresented communities and has created a flourishing company.
Please submit a resume (that lists two references), a letter of interest, and your school transcript to contactus@herotheatre.org by May 8th, 2026.
While not required, if you’re an artist (i.e. actor, director, designer) please feel welcome to submit a separate creative resume as well and any photos/videos of your work.
