Description

Join Young Storytellers as a Programs & Volunteer Engagement Intern and be part of the magic that helps students discover the power of their voices! For over 25 years, we’ve been bringing storytelling to life in Los Angeles schools—just steps from Hollywood—making this a truly one-of-a-kind experience. In this role, you’ll support our storytelling programs, organize exciting events and prepare the volunteers who make it all possible. You’ll also pitch in on outreach projects, keep program details running smoothly, and get a behind-the-scenes look at how a creative nonprofit runs.  Along the way, you’ll gain valuable professional skills, connect with a passionate team, and contribute to a joyful community centered on belonging, creativity, play, antiracism, and equity. This paid LACAC internship runs August/September 2026–March 1, 2027 (16–20 hrs/week, up to 400 hours total) with a flexible hybrid schedule—plus at least two days a week in our lively DTLA office.

Qualifications

The Programs & Volunteer Engagement Intern should bring strong verbal and written communication skills, good time management, and integrity when handling sensitive information. Experience with volunteers, facilitation, or Google Workspace (especially Sheets) is a plus, as is an interest in nonprofits or education. Key responsibilities include supporting program logistics like writing sessions and Big Show performances, tracking and inputting student, school, and family paperwork, and maintaining data in SOGO, Google Workspace, and the YS database. The intern will also assist with volunteer recruitment, training, and engagement, contribute to outreach and community-building in line with YS’s equity goals, and help manage priorities using Asana. Throughout, the intern is expected to integrate YS’s values of diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and antiracism into all aspects of their work while bringing curiosity and a willingness to learn.

Background

Young Storytellers sparks creative self-discovery through storytelling. Our programs highlight young people as the center of their own narratives, emphasize that their stories matter, and celebrate their unique voices as the ones telling them. Through a creative storytelling program that engages youth at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, our organization offers a Common Core-aligned, scaling curriculum to address targeted needs in public education. We aim to integrate culturally competent social emotional learning opportunities and social justice standards, and to be centered in anti-racism, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, so that our students feel respected and comfortable with expressing themselves. Young Storytellers works towards a future where young people experience the impact that their thoughts, feelings, and words can have on the world in which they live.
