Street Poets - Social Media Intern

141 West 28th Street
Los Angeles, CA 90007
Status
Open
Description

The Social Media Intern will design and lead a youth-centered digital storytelling project that amplifies Street Poets’ creative programs and community impact. Working closely with staff and the Youth Council, the intern will shape our voice across platforms like TikTok and Instagram — creating short-form videos, event highlights, and behind-the-scenes content that authentically reflect the experiences of systems-impacted youth in South LA. This project strengthens Street Poets’ outreach strategy while developing the intern’s skills in content production, marketing, and arts-based community engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. develop and manage a youth-led content calendar aligned with program milestones and events;
  2. produce short-form video content (e.g., TikTok, Instagram Reels) that showcases Street Poets’ creative work and youth culture;
  3. capture live events (open mics, workshops, retreats) and edit highlights for real-time storytelling;
  4. collaborate with the Youth Council and Outreach Team to ensure content is authentic, relevant, and mission-aligned;
  5. support outreach through youth-designed marketing materials and revive Street Poets’ podcast with peer-led interviews; and
  6. curate archive content that connects past impact with present-day storytelling.

Growth & Learning: The intern will gain hands-on experience in social media strategy, filmmaking, and community-based marketing. They will also receive mentorship in creative communication, leadership, and reflection on self-care in media work. Freedom of Ideas: The intern will be encouraged to bring their own creative vision to each campaign — experimenting with new formats, sounds, and aesthetics that reflect youth culture and their personal voice. Deliverables: Launch a refreshed youth-led social media series (3–5 short videos). Create a 1-month content calendar and outreach strategy. Produce one podcast segment or event highlight reel. Present final deliverables with reflections on storytelling and wellness.

Additional Duties

Additional duties and activities for both Interns may include: Serve as representatives on Street Poets’ Youth Council, helping shape programming, advise on youth space design, and lead feedback efforts. Help create program evaluations that speak to youth perspectives (using emojis, authentic language, and open-ended questions), gathering both qualitative and quantitative data. Conduct peer interviews and listening sessions to gather authentic youth reflections and ideas — both to assess Street Poets’ impact and to co-design youth-led solutions for future programs and storytelling. Support light administrative and operational tasks: organizing art kits and merchandise, helping with mailings, managing inventory of books and creative materials. Assist with organizing and designing Street Poets' youth library and creative spaces, ensuring they reflect youth voices and needs. Attend staff meetings, creative planning sessions, and weekly check-ins with their mentor supervisor for ongoing learning and support.

Qualifications

We’re looking for someone with a strong interest in creative storytelling, content creation, and social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. You don’t need to be a pro — but you should enjoy taking photos or videos, writing captions, and thinking about what inspires people online. Experience with Canva, CapCut, or any editing apps is a plus, but not required. Interest in poetry, hip-hop, community organizing, or social justice is a big bonus.

We work with system-impacted and underserved youth across the city through workshops, performances, recording sessions, mentoring, retreats, and open mics — all rooted in self-expression, cultural connection, and community healing.
