Renewal of Vows at Evergreen Cemetery, 2021, Acrylic on canvas board

Death parted them, but reunited in the afterlife, they decide to renew their vows. Exiting the iconic Ivy Chapel, the mariachi band plays for the happy couple as a few residents of Evergreen Cemetery in Boyle Heights join in the celebration!

Established in 1877, over 300,000 individuals are laid to rest at Evergreen Cemetery. The people’s headstones at the base of the painting are a small cross-section of the Eastern European, Jewish, Japanese, Chinese, African American, and Latino communities who have called Boyle Heights home.
