Reenactment of Lynching in Los Angeles, 2015, Photograph

Juan Flores (1834-1957) was one of over a dozen Latino men lynched in downtown Los Angeles a few blocks from Grand Park and yet, to date, no markers of this history have been created by the City, County, or State. Over 134 Latinos were lynched in California and over 500 nationwide. Other lynching victims in downtown Los Angeles include: Reyes Feliz, Doroteo Zabaleta, Jesus Rivas, Cipriano Sandoval, Benito Lopez, “Baramas”, Ignacio Herrera, Francisco Cota, Pancho Daniel, and Tapia a.k.a. Leonardo Lopez—all lynched in Los Angeles! See my book Lynching in the West 1850-1935 (Duke, 2006) for more information.
