Going West: Figueroa St and Jefferson St, 2018, Photograph

In 2018, I completed a series of photographs titled, Going West or 15 Years in LA, about four separate neighborhoods I had lived in since moving to Los Angeles. During this time, I was in the process of being evicted from my home, which caused me to reflect on not only my own time within the city, but how it had changed since I moved here.

Going West: Broadway Ave. depicts an ice cream truck parked down the street from the house I lived in, and which children would come visit daily The image is marked on, as parts of the photo have been highlighted, duplicated, graffitied, and whited out. The ice truck no longer visits this neighborhood, as the community it visited has shifted quite dramatically. For me, this image has become a marker of an ever-shifting city, affected by gentrification, development, and ever continuous cultural change.

Going West: Figueroa St. and Jefferson St. depicts the Felix Car dealership, which is located directly across from the University of Southern California, where I went as an undergraduate student The image is marked on, as parts of the photo have been highlighted, duplicated, graffitied, and whited out. While the sign for the dealership is still intact, the dealership itself no longer exists. For me, this image has become a marker of an ever-shifting city, affected by gentrification, development and ever continuous cultural change.
